Tips For Finding Cheap Train Tickets

Saturday, December 4th, 2010

Competition among railways, not to mention the airline industry, has made it easier than ever to obtain cheap train travel. Although not as rapid as planes, traveling by train allows you to enjoy the scenery more thoroughly.

Ways to Get Cheap Train Tickets

Schedule your travel during the off season. Summer is the peak time, so tickets will cost more and be harder to get. You should instead travel sometime around autumn/fall. If you plan your spring break early, you can be assured of getting low cost tickets, especially on the Net.

Not only will you get cheaper tickets, but you will also get good deals on food and lodging. The other plus of course, is you can visit those tourist spots without too many tourists.

Visit Online Train Websites

These are good places to look for cheap train tickets and special deals. Make sure you compare the offers from various companies; they are always trying to outdo one another, so you have plenty of choices.

Some train companies also offer tickets at half price if you are bringing kids. Some even waive the fee if the child is two years old and below.

Visit Travel Agent Websites

These sites also offer discounts and specials. What these sites share in common is that the deals encompass several aspects of the trip. It is not just the tickets, but also the lodging.

Purchase train tickets as early as possible. Most train companies release the tickets 12 weeks prior to the scheduled travel date. The earlier you purchase the tickets, the cheaper they will be.

Other Ways to Get Cheap Train Fares

Go to passenger train websites and examine their fare finder capabilities. Using this tool will give you the flexibility to locate the most affordable tickets around.

By expanding the date range for your trip, you lessen travel expenses. This happens because you can select from a wider range of days. Again, do not travel during the peak season as the costs will be high.

Research is the Key

Special deals and offers come in the form of promotional codes, special discounts and more. To make research easier, enter your travel destination and the date. The search engine will return numerous hits. Now you can compare the offers from the various companies.

Other Tips and Hints

Stick with one train service; this will entitle you to ticket discounts and other special deals. Most train companies have a points system of some sort; every time you travel, you rack up points. When you reach a certain number, you become eligible for discounts or freebies.

The rewards can range from gift certificates, items and more. Also check if the company offers discounts for senior citizens, students and war veterans. They usually do, although the rates may differ.

Finding cheap train tickets is actually easier than you may have thought. You just need to do some research on the Web, and you are bound to find a deal that will save you quite a bit of cash.

Amtrak’s Low Fares – Seven Tips to Receive Discounted Fares

Friday, November 26th, 2010

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation was created by Congress in 1970 to take over the passenger rail services previously required to be operated by private freight railroad companies in the United States. Those companies reported they had operated the services without profit for over a decade. The vast majority of passenger rail routes in existence at that time were shut down to focus the service on the most heavily used lines. The popular nickname “Amtrak” was created as a blend of the words “America” and “track.”

Amtrak provides a number of discount fare programs to entice prospective passengers and their families on their trains. Each of the seven deals listed below are subject to the following rules:

1. They must be purchased at least three days in advance

2. Discounted fares cannot be combined on one ticket

3. These fares are not valid for weekday Acela Express travel

4. They are not valid on some Amtrak Thruway bus services

5. Passengers traveling in Business class, First class or sleeping accommodation are not eligible for these discounts.

One: Up to two children under the age of 16 are eligible to receive a 50% discount on the lowest available adult rail fare on most Amtrak trains with each fare-paying adult. Also, one infant under the age of two may ride free with each adult ticket purchased. Infants are not entitled to a seat. Only children traveling with an adult are entitled to a children’s discount.

Two: Travelers over the age of 61 are eligible to receive a 15% discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains. On cross-border services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada, a 10% Senior discount is applicable to travelers over the age of 59. You cannot use the senior discount on the Auto Train.

Three: Active-duty US military personnel, their spouses and their dependents are eligible to receive a 10% discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains. This discount is also valid on the Auto Train. You must present a valid active-duty United States Armed Forces identification card to receive the discount.   The military discount is valid only on the American portion of services operated jointly between Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.

Four: The  (NARP) is the largest national membership advocacy organization for train and rail transit passengers.  NARP members are eligible to receive a 10% discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains. You must present your NARP membership ID card when you pick up your ticket, and you must carry your card with you on-board the train. The NARP discount is valid only on the American portion of services operated jointly between Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.

Five: The Veterans AdvantageTM is a discount card program for veterans. Veterans holding a valid Veterans Advantage Members Card are eligible to receive a 15% discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains. You must enroll with Veterans Advantage and receive a 10-digit travel discount code that can be used immediately to book your Amtrak travel. The Veterans Advantage is valid only on the American portion of services operated jointly between Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.

Six: The Student Advantage Card is the nation’s largest student discount program. Students are eligible to receive a 15% discount on the best available adult rail fare on most Amtrak trains all year long. You must present both a valid Student Advantage Card and a valid photo ID at time of ticket purchase and on-board trains to receive the discount. Each of these items must be valid for the current school term. For Auto Train service, Student Advantage cardholders receive a 15% discount off adult rail fare but no discount on their vehicles. The Student Advantage Card is valid only on the American portion of services operated jointly between Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada. The Student Advantage discount is not valid for any Rail Passes or Multi-Ride tickets.

Seven: More than 5 million students around the world will purchase an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) this year. To qualify for your ISIC, you must be age 12 or older and currently enrolled as a degree seeking student at an accredited institution. Students holding a valid ISIC are eligible to receive a 15% discount on the best available adult rail fare on most Amtrak trains all year long. You must present both a valid ISIC and a valid photo ID at time of ticket purchase and on-board trains to receive the discount. Each of these items must be valid for the current school term. For Auto Train service, ISIC cardholders receive a 15% discount off adult rail fare but no discount on their vehicles. The ISIC is valid only on the American portion of services operated jointly between Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada. The ISIC discount is not valid for any Rail Passes or Multi-Ride tickets.

What to Do When Losing Your Train Ticket

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

If you’ve found this article, then there’s a big possibility that you’ve already lost your train ticket. I guess it is too late to mention that we should always keep tickets in a safe place. Anyway, you must be wondering what to do when you lose railway tickets. First of all, if you tend to lose and misplace things a lot then it might be a good idea to get travel insurance that also covers lost tickets.

Before purchasing travel insurance, ask if they cover ticket loss. Not all insurance companies do. While you are at it. Check if they will reimburse it with money in a timely manner. Some insurance companies may take forever to reimburse your loss and involve too much red tape and hassle.

Another trick to get your lost ticket back is to call the railway company and tell them you never received the tickets in the mail. You can do this if you had your tickets mailed to you. It is a little white lie but, desperate measures are called for. There might be problems though if you had to sign a receipt when it was delivered to you because the train company will have proof that you received the ticket.

If you have lost your rail pass, the tickets you purchased against a pass becomes invalid even if you didn’t lose the ticket. Your pass isn’t replaceable or refundable. If you only lost the ticket and still have the rail pass, then you can easily have your ticket replaced.

In the case of Amtrak tickets, you can fill up the Lost Ticket Refund Form and mail it to the address indicated on the form. You can download the form found in the railway website. All you need is to provide the ticket number and pay service and refund fees. Take note that, not all tickets are refundable. Some discount or promotional tickets cannot be refunded. Lost tickets can’t be used because the train company puts the lost ticket application on hold for 5 months or so.

If you are travelling by train in Europe, you can avail of the Rail Europe’s Pass Protection. This lets you reimburse the remaining value of a rail pass. If you don’t purchase a Rail Europe Pass Protection and lose your rail pass, then you will unfortunately have to buy the pass and tickets to continue using the train.

If you lost a virtual ticket or a ticket printed from an online purchase, you can easily print it again on your computer. Be sure to notify the railway company about lost tickets immediately so they can give you a new ticket and cancel the ticket if it is stolen. If you show up at the train station and try to reason with the conductor about losing your ticket, he will likely charge you for a new ticket and not get reimbursement for the lost ticket.

Taking the train is a great alternative to other modes of transport anyway you look at it. Light rail transit and high speed trains are also healthier for the environment than gas guzzling automobiles.

Comparing Train Ticket Prices With Bus Prices

Monday, October 18th, 2010

It is not easy to plan a vacation. It needs a lot of planning and time. The problem becomes more complex if you have limited budget, in that case you have to find a good and economical prices which are not easy to come by.

Planning a Vacation

When you decide to go on a vacation with your family, or friends it is obvious that you have some savings in your account but in most cases these are not enough. That is why people start to plan the vacations well in advance like one year before, this helps a lot as you know how much money you need and you manage your savings accordingly. Usually people try to minimize the traveling cost by taking multiple stops and searching the cheap routes, fares. Tourist packages are also a very way of saving some money as they are intended for tourists and also the rates are very reasonable, which help the tourists in twofold as they have to spend less money and they can explore most of the tourist resorts.

Figuring Your Mode of Transportation Out

Once you have decided where you want to go then you have to see your traveling options. These depend on the budget you have. If we sort the options then you have five options in total, as the last one is not much availed by people and is for a limited class of people. The first option is to take a plane, the second one is by train, the third is by bus, the fourth one is to travel by your own car and the last one is to take a ride with someone if you find some friends of family going to or nearby the desired location. The last option is mostly taken by the college students when they have to travel to faraway places.

Train Ticket Price versus the Bus Ticket Price

With the air fares touching the skies, more and more people are opting for cheaper means of transportation when planning their vacation or holidays. Trains, although are considerably slower than trains, they are much cheaper and cut your traveling costs to half.

Buses are even slower than trains and might take you thrice as long traveling time as compared to train to reach your destination. However, bus tickets are not necessarily cheaper than train tickets these days. The price of a bus ticket depends on your location and the bus service you are using. Whereas, the price of the train ticket can vary according to your destination, the kind of compartment you book as well as how early you book your seat. If you book your train tickets early, like say 3 months before you leave, then you can get very good discount deals on your tickets. But these discount deals differ or may be specified to some locations only.

Whether you buy a train ticket or a bus ticket, their costs depend on the factors mentioned above which is why in order to reduce your travelling costs, you need to thoroughly research all available options.

Web Based – Travel Reservation Software

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Do you or your company sell or deal with any of the following:  Flights (airline tickets), hotel rooms, car rentals, travel packages, tours, restaurant reservations, attraction or special event tickets, ferries, travel insurance, cruises, public transportation, train tickets, or currency exchange?  If you work in the travel industry then that was a pretty redundant question, but why am I asking it?  I am not trying to waste your time, in fact I am trying to save you time.  I will ask you one more question, and this time it is important.  How many different pieces of software do you use to offer your services to you clients?   Making multiple searches to find the best deals for your customers is now a thing of the past.  There is a new piece of travel reservation software which provides an end to end solution for all types of travel companies: travel agencies, tour operators, inbound, outbound, charter operators, congress organizers and more.

Currently the hottest selling online travel reservation software is called Gilboa by Galor.  Galor is one of the older travel agent management system producers.  They have been around since 1989 and their travel reservation software is used by 700 clients and over 6000 users in over 22 countries.  What makes Galor’s software so special is that it can interface with all of the Global Distribution Systems like Sabre, Amadeus, WorldSpan, and Galileo.  It also integrates website and online bookings, comes with financial tools specific to the travel industry, and can handle wholesale, in-house and tailor made bookings.

This article is about informing you that there are other options out there for travel reservation software.  There is no longer the need to rely on several systems, which waste valuable time with multiple searches. There is now travel reservation software that works with the GDS’s, and with the private charters and specials that you have worked out directly with other travel companies.  You can throw away all your binders because the records you need can be found indexed and researched on your computer.  These programs are scalable so that they can work with both small and large travel companies.  If you are a small company looking to expand, this is the perfect answer because the software can help in expansion and you won’t have to find new software once your client base grows.  If you are a large travel network or company, reducing your travel reservation software to one program is a great way to save time and money.

One piece of travel reservation software means less training and more uniformity no matter what size your business is.  A little research today can help your travel business for years to come.

Holiday Travel By Train

Friday, February 12th, 2010

More and more citizens are turning to Amtrak as a reliable way to travel for the holidays. After the terrorist attacks of  Nine Eleven, airport security has become more and more difficult to get through. As a result most airports have long lines and delays taking place around the holidays because they don’t want to turn into lax even when it is busy.

Traveling with kids for the holidays can be tense, especially if you are traveling with them alone. Keeping children entertained in a automobile for the trip is often a two person job so one can drive and one can play games or offer refreshments to keep everyone in the car happy for the duration of the voyage.

Airplanes are very overcrowded and most people don’t do well with kids roaming the isles or crying during the air travel. For younger children, the quantity of pressure that can build in their ears on an airplane is very hurting. Being stuck on a runway for hours will definitely make kids uncomfortable and these delays often happen around the holidays. If you have ever tried to change diapers in the small airplane WC you will know that it isn’t an easy feat to accomplish.

Amtrak is very family oriented so this may be the best form of transportation for your holiday tour. The coaches are roomy and you are able to get up and walk around without restraint. There is plenty of panorama along the railway routes too for you to enjoy.

If you are be going on a long voyage for the holidays, Amtrak offers sleeping cars of different sizes. This is a great way for your children to have the room they need to take a snooze and to play. Most of the family sleeping cars offer enough room for two adults and two children comfortably.

You will find great holiday travel deals on Amtrak when you reserve a sleep car as well. Many times you will get coupons for free meals offered in the dining car. This is an expense you will have to cover on your own otherwise so it helps offset the cost of the sleep car.

Make sure you make reservations for Amtrak early though. They tickets often sell out quickly for holiday travel and they have a limited number of sleeping carriages. You don’t want to be having difficulties without one or have to accept one that is too small for comfort because you waited too long to make your reservation.

Most train stations are very well set up and you can even leave your auto there when you board the Amtrak for free. Most airports charge you by the day to leave your vehicle behind and that is an expense that quickly adds up. You can either have your family or friends pick you up at the train station for your destination or choose alternate modes of transportation. There will likely be rental cars at the terminal or you can take a taxi cab.

You can check internet for train tickets USA

to find out a variety of destinations that Amtrak travels to. If they don’t go to your exact  location but within hundred  miles you may want to consider having someone pick you up there or to rent a car to go the rest of the way. Amtrak is affordable and much more comfortable than taking a plane or traveling all that way in a car.

See America by Train

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

All aboard!

The USA has much more to offer the tourist than guaranteed sunshine and bargain shopping, and there’s a relatively unknown way to discover what this country is really all about. Most people think of traveling by car or plane but you should certainly investigate America’s wonderful trains – perhaps the last means of luxury transport available to everyone. The 25,000 mile Amtrak rail network takes in almost all states, giving a choice of 500 destinations and access to such tourist essentials as San Francisco, the Rocky Mountains and the Grand Canyon.

The Iron Horse

Railroads opened up America more than a century ago and some of today’s long-distance trains still follow the original pioneering routes. They also use many of the great stations built during the golden age of passenger travel. An impressive example stands in Washington, DC, decorated in gold leaf and restored to its original grandeur with dozens of shops, restaurants and a multi-screen cinema. Chicago’s Union Station features a marble and brass waiting room as large as many a cathedral. It’s said that Al Capone used to stop by for his daily shoeshine in the shower room below.

Hotels on wheels

US trains are like mobile hotels, boasting gleaming aluminium twin-decked coaches, air-conditioning, observation cars and uniformed attendants who make you feel you have stepped into a 1930s Hollywood movie. Reclining seats are thick and soft, with comfortable leg-rests so that you can snooze after a meal or sleep through the night (a good way to save on hotel bills). Pillows and subdued lighting are provided by the attendant.

Trains also have traditional sleeping cars with cosy bedrooms ranging from single ‘roomettes’ to family size affairs for those travelling with children. Accommodation includes breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining car, as well as complimentary tea or coffee and a newspaper delivered each morning. Meals are of a high standard, including regional specials such as freshly caught trout or barbecued spare ribs. Video films of recent vintage are shown in the lounge bar during the evenings, when the place becomes lively with impromptu parties and poker games.

Time to unwind

The atmosphere on board is invariably relaxed and the modest speed perfect for sightseeing, so this is a great way to explore the landscape and meet the natives. You have room to stretch out or walk around and instead of racing above the clouds you can watch an entire continent unroll outside the wraparound windows. Even occasional glimpses of city backyards can be fascinating, although trains are scheduled to pass through the less prepossessing areas by night. Children are particularly well catered for with games and other amusements and rarely become bored with the thrill of riding the tracks and making new friends.

Chance encounters are a vital part of what makes American train journeys such a rewarding experience. One day it may be a group of Italian schoolgirls heading for Niagara Falls, the next it is Australian backpackers in Texas. US trains are friendly places and you’re sure to run into someone interesting. You can learn a lot by sitting next to a Kansas City mortician or a drag artist on her way to entertain the troops in San Diego. Between small towns and big cities you also experience the country’s sheer size and variety, getting a feel for what this land must have been like before the days of McDonalds and Coca Cola.

Low prices

Best of all, ticket prices are amazingly low and visitors from overseas benefit from an array of passes that make this one of the world’s great travel bargains. You can stop off en route as often as you wish and for any length of time, so given a little planning you should find a train to take you almost everywhere you want to go, and perhaps to a few places you hadn’t expected. It’s easy to work out an itinerary that lets you see more of this diverse country in a short time than is possible any other way. And as the bell clangs and the conductor calls out ‘All aboard!’ you soon discover why the railroad experience is so delightfully addictive.
